How to start an essay
When writing an essay about animal testing, one of the basic rules one has to work with is planning. Like most other writing tasks academic or otherwise, it is important for one to plan what they are going to put into paper. This basically involves arranging one’s thoughts and points, they would want to bring to the readers. The first step involves deciding on the topic to handle. Animal testing is a broad spectrum topic and there are many directions one can take. In this case, the topic is animal testing ethics; as is evident, this is fairly manageable topic and one that does not overwhelm the writer or the readers. This is then followed by writing down the thesis statement. This is the guiding statement that is going to form the bulk of the essay and the structure. By coming up with a good thesis statement, a writer is able to develop points and ideas to support their view on the topic. It is from this point on the writer is then able to write down the main ideas that they would want to bring up in the essay. It is important to write these down for ease of better organization. At the same time, writing the ideas down in what is going to form the outline of the paper also helps to streamline the development of the argument, as the writer can then remove or add sections that they feel will better bring out their central idea.
Example of introduction:
“Like humans, animals also have rights which should be considered at all times when interacting with them. This is especially the case when considering testing animals. For the longest time, animal testing has been one of the foundations of medical experimentations and discoveries. Ironically, for the longest time, animal rights have not been upheld and animals have been subjected to severe living and testing conditions. There is a debate that surrounds testing animals before trying out medical intervention on humans. This is involves using anesthesia to ensure that animals do not feel pain or do not experience painful deaths. In some of the cases however, involves infecting the animals with certain pathogens and then using the inventions in medicine to establish the eve of success. This means, the animals have to experience and show signs of infection after which they can then be treated and monitored throughout the process. Medical researchers have a duty to the health fraternity and even humanity to come up with the best medical interventions for the human health and continuity of life. As such they have to be accorded all the resources that they need to come up with medication that is not only going to be used for the animals but also for and most importantly the humans. There is a standard to be maintained however, where the practitioners and researcher involved in animal experimentation and testing use ethical standards to minimize unnecessary cruelty to the animals.”
Example of thesis:
“Animal testing and experimentation should be ethical to minimize unwarranted cruelty to test subjects.”
How to write the body
When writing the body paragraphs, it is important for the writer to note that there is need for the various paragraphs to carry their own message. This is to mean, every other paragraph should be carrying its own view or idea which then falls within the organization of ideas and the main argument. In this case, the paragraphs are limited to three for reasons of clarity and to avoid having too much information that drains away the level of precision, considering this a short essay at 1200 words. The first paragraph establishes the cruelty involved in animal testing. This calls for the strict enforcement of policies that scarp away the element of cruelty when it comes to testing animals. The second paragraph addresses the need to use animals for testing and addresses the reasons as to why it is inevitable. In the third paragraph, comes to the middle ground where they establish the need to recognize animals have rights. At the same time the paragraph addresses the need to understand the reasons for moderate animal cruelty. As such, in this paragraph the writer will highlight the need for controlled animal cruelty and the need for animal rights. Thereby, the third paragraph is one establishing the middle ground for the animal testing.
Example of body paragraphs for essay:
Example: (1st )
“Like humans animals also feel pain and they also have emotions which when violated make them uncomfortable. This is the reason there are animal right to protect the animals from acts that could easily cause them pain and or discomfort. Throughout history, animals have in some of the cases been subjected to cruel testing and experimentations in the name of science. These cruel means of testing on animals have subjected them to heinous acts and in some of the cases the animals have died from such acts. This is inappropriate and should be curtailed through the use of animal rights.”
“Animal testing is a procedure that quite regulated much like any other research procedures. This is relative to the fact that, there need for formality in the procedures relative to the way results are generated. When testing out new medical interventions, researchers have to make sure their procedures can be replicated. Secondly, researchers in the health sector have to be given the resources they need to develop the best medicine. This means, aspects such as animal ethics do not take as much impact on the process. Instead the medical researchers use animals for the tests as they cannon use humans. By using animals they are able to establish how certain compounds in the medicine react with the pathogens in the body. This is a more ethical approach than testing out the impact of pathogens on the human subjects. As such, it is inevitable, researchers are going to be working with animal subjects to establish the effectiveness of, say an additional compound in the medicine.”
“It is important to recognize the existence of animal rights when it comes to testing animals. This is an approach to best achieve some element of balance between the cruelty and human nature of the procedures. It is important to reduce the level of cruelty and reduce any unnecessary elements in the tests. This way, there is a standard approach for researchers to use carrying out tests. It is important for researchers to maintain standards which ensure minimal pain and cruelty to the animals. Where the pain may lead to death, this should be managed with anesthetics where possible.”
How to conclude
When concluding an essay, it is basic for the writer to bring to a close the argument they have put across in the paper. This will involve the writer summarizing the argument pints in the body and connecting them to the thesis in the paper.
Example of conclusion:
“The element of animal cruelty is one that has persisted for the greater part of history. This is largely the case when considering animal testing. Animals have been used as Guinea pigs for the longest time and there is need to address animal rights. Inflicting pain on animals while carrying out tests is unacceptable. Researchers however, need all the resources they can use when carrying out tests. This however does not mean researchers cannot strike balance when testing where they reduce unnecessary cruelty.”
People clearly want the benefits that derive from animal research. They also want animals to be well-treated and to undergo a minimum of pain and distress. These desires result from our values, from the importance we ascribe to both human and animal life.
But decisions about the use of animals should be based both on reason and values. It makes no sense to sacrifice future human health and well being by not using animals in research today. In fact, it would be immoral and selfish not to use animals in research today, given the harm that could accrue to future generations if such research were halted.
The promise that animal research holds for generations of humans remains undiminished
The majority of Americans agree that animal research must continue. But legislators rarely hear from this majority, whereas they are bombarded by appeals from the small minority who wish to stop or severely curtail such research. Many scientific, medical, and patient groups have come out strongly in favor of humanely conducted animal research. The National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine would like to add their voices to the chorus of support for animal research.
We owe our good health to past investigators and the animals they studied. As we decide on the future of animal research, we should keep in mind the future generations who will look back at us and ask if we acted wisely.
